Our shoot went really well! We managed to get all planned shots in time, and even had time left at the end to try experimental angles and camera movement. We spent 10 hours there, in heels, which was tiring but satisfying as we managed to get all the shots we wanted (and met a celebrity!)

Backstage Photos

These are some backstage photos from the shoot, which I put on facebook but are good for evidence of how we worked on the day, the equipment, and the amazing studio we were working in.

Hey guys, what's the situation with the paglights? We need them for our shoot today at 2.30, and we're shooting in a forest, some of which will be in the dark, so please get back to us as soon as possible... Mia & the group xx

Amelia's skirt

It actually looks good and fits the outfit but is also a bit quirky.

What shoes should we wear? I'm thinking sparkly platforms, or else all black of different styles. I don't think we should wear tights, as they usually don't in dance music videos.

I think the bright pink one, but bring both just in case..?

also, we all bringing black tights?

Here's our storyboard. We always knew our video would be an 'edit job' but a storyboard is always helpful when shooting and editing.

reply to holly..

yeah that's exactly what I was thinking...

good plan!

Styles Of Shooting

If we do end up with shooting one location (as is the plan at the moment - in the Holborn studios) I think our video could really benefit from some really stylistic shooting. We could experiment with coloured filters, or during editing have some things in colour and some not, and I was thinking about having some robotic, juttery cuts to give parts of the video a surreal, unsrttling feeling, as the song is about voodoo and magic.

These two videos give examples of some the shots we could try. In editing, we could repeeat or re-wind some shots to give parts of the video a slightly weird feeling, especially in the parts where we've decided to try some robotic movements.

Dizzee Rascal: I Luv U

Madonna: Celebration

Another locacation

I agree, I think just having all the characters in the studio will be really one-dimentional and potentially boring. We could start off in a bedroom like you mum's would work or Amelia said her grandma's?
I can imagine Laura lolling around in a bedroom, thinking about this guy....and then her other personalities take over and we get transported to the studio as if within her mind.
What do other people think?

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Just a thought...

  1. I think we need more than one location. I was thinking we cuold start the video with some narrative in a bedroom (holly's mums?) and then cut to the studio as if it is her subconcious, becuase I don't see how it can start in the studio. And then perhaps it could go back there at the end?
  2. We need to make a shooting schedule
  3. I'm going to call Billy tomorrow and ask(/beg) for another day because i think we really need it. Also i think it would be good if we bought him some champagne or nice wine or something, to say thank you

Couple of things...

I still dont have anything to wear on the bottom half with my corset...
secondly what is laura going to wear before she becomes 'envy'??

That's what the website says.. do you think I should order them? Can't find any other good ones... and neither Boots, nor Superdrug, nor Cootes (stupid pharmacy in Finchley) do them!!!

Test shoot

Amelia and I had a half day, so thought we'd do a test shoot at the studios. Here is some of the footage, roughly edited together. We tried out the marching move on "here come the drums" but i don't think it will work as well as we had hoped...

We also learnt that we need A LOT of lights as such a big white space seems to make everything look quite dull, so we'll book all the lights at school and maybe some more if we need.

We spotted a male mannequin in the foyer surrounded by other props and ladders etc, so maybe we'll be able to use that.

Ordering props

Hey, just ordered the corset, and that went fine. But when trying to order the lenses, it said that its a wholesale site and that there is a minimum spend of £75.... so am gonna try and find another webiste that sells them..

Friday, October 16, 2009

Since we are only getting the studio for 1 day (confirmed), we have had to narrow down our costumes. We are going to wear our 7 deadly sins outfits, and the one outfit that we all wear. We are thinking about using Charlotte's blue acid wash bodycon dress because we can accessorize it since it is quite plain.

We've booked every light that the media department has, and might look for some more as we need LOADS.

After our auditions, we got TONNES of feedback and the overall choice was to have Laura as the 'main' girl, so we went with that.

Marie Antoinette Costume

Well we've finally found a corset that would be PERFECT. Its from a website called, and its only £25! Miss B said she would pay for it so its fine, although we should probably order it soon because we want it to come in time.

The colours are just perfect, and it looks really frilly and old fashioned. I think if i wear it with a tutu or a frilly skirt it'll be great.
I also have a feather fan with I think would look good as it is the same colour pink as the corset.

This fan is really similar to the one I have and I think it'll work really well.

This is the kind of look I'll go for for styling and hair etc, might spray my hair white...not sure yet though

Accessory ideas

For one of my looks, Envy, I am going to be wearing a green dress (photos on blog) which is great, however in comparison to the other "looks" - corsets, leotards etc. - it looks a bit plain. So in order to jazz it up a bit, I thought I'd wear green contact lenses to make my eyes look really surreal.

I found these, which are striking and cheap! - £8.50 from this website.

Coral Green:
Forest Green:
Sea Green:

I personally think the "Forest Green" are the best because they are the brightest, and will get noticed. Plus, they match the colour of the dress.

We also talked about using false eye-lashes to make even more impact around the eyes. Appparently Suzi, our helper, has 5 pairs of them, so that is great, but I also researched to find some just in case.

This is from here - £3.50 + £1 postage. Not bad!
Or here - £2.40 + £1 postage, even cheaper!

There are loads, so it depends what we're looking for in terms of size, colour, style etc. So we'll have a look at what Suzi's got, and make a decision.

For the eye make-up, I was thinking along the lines of this:
Something really bold that commands the audience to look at my eyes. I think all our make-up should be very over the top in a "top model" kind of way.

In terms of hair style, there are two options.

1) curly hair - resembling that of Meduca (except without the snakes). This would have lots of volume and be a bit out of control (reflecting the crazy envy).

2) dead straight - this could work well since it is very striking, and as it is quite simple, it would make the make-up stand out more, which may be better.

Practically, straight hair is probably a lot easier to style, despite my natural hair being wavy/curly, because to get the curls just right would take a lot of tong-ing and hair spray, whereas you can't go too wrong with a pair of straighteners... I'll try both in the next few weeks and see which one works better.

Group Meeting

In our group meeting today, we discussed how to plan our music video further. We had previously thought about whether or not we are going to have a single artist or a group but didn't come to a final decision. Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to decide on having one main character in the video who is the artist and the other characters her alter-egos or bad personalities. This also allows us to have some progression in the video, which we wouldn't have had if it was just loads of images of us dressed in different outfits.
I quickly jotted down a very brief and rough outline to the video:
  • Begin main character sitting with flowers or some sort of object that associates her with the man she is singing about looking sad
  • Her 'bad personalities' come out and she throws away this object
  • Performance of the 'bad personalities' shown almost corrupting her in a way (whispering in her ear, kind of seducing her)
  • Performing with mannequin of a mans torso, representing the man she is singing about, pushing it around, 'controlling it'
  • End on strong shot of main character in her normal outfit that she is wearing at the beginning but has the bold make up she has as her 'bad personality'

This is a very brief outline of the progression of the character. There will also be many other shots involving reference to the lyrics including:
  • 'Do I twist, do I fold' - shot of playing cards, possibly with a kiss on the King/Queen of hearts
  • 'Why don't you tell me my future' - shot with tarot cards, either looking at the cards or throwing them at the camera
  • 'Here come the drums, here come the drums' - us miming drumming, either in the band uniforms or just as our personalities (this shot isn't important anymore but was one of our favourites when we thought of the idea and so can still be put in there just for fun
  • 'You're kisses are cold' - a bad personality kissing the main character on the cheek
  • 'Sticking pins in a doll' - sticking pins in a voodoo doll, or on the mannequinn so that it is not literally just illustration of the lyrics

Seven Deadly Sins

So we decided we are going to draw inspiration for the characters/bad personalities from the Seven Deadly Sins. I looked on the internet and found these definitions of the sins:
  • Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
  • Pride is excessive beliefe in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
  • Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
  • Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
  • Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetourness.
  • Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.
  • Wrath is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury.
Because there is only four of us in our group we are only going to be four of the Seven Deadly Sins and we have picked Lust, Envy, Greed and Wrath. We have thought about the styling for these characters but for inspiration I have also looked on the internet as America's Next Top Model did a photoshoot as The Seven Deadly Sins, so I thought the pictures would be good to get ideas from.

I think for our video, an important element is to have fun, because we're all performing and this will come across in the video. If we're happy, the audience will feel happy. So we all need to get on as well as we can and have fun on our shoots. Here are some back-stage snaps of us getting ready and some "group photos":

Practice Shoot of Looks

We all dressed up in some of our costumes to practice styling and facial expression, so that we are not at a loss on the actual day of the shoot. Here are the results:

1) Holly: 80's/disco
  • Blue sequin dress & fur jacket, purple lips.

In these pictures I was going for angular poses reflecting the time period, when shoulder pads and arm-focused dance was popular. My facial expression is pretty much the same in every picture: wide mouth and smiley. This very much helped me to visualise the performance part of the day, which is key in the video's success.

2) Amelia: 80's/disco
  • Pink sequin dress, snakeskin platform shoes, purple lipstick

Amelia, again, reflects 80's dance moves by using her arms and flicking her hair around. But she has played around with facial expression: seducing the camera by pouting towards it, looking the other way as if in mid dance, and playing with her hair.

3) Charlotte: the deadly sin "LUST".
  • Black play-suit, black heels, red lips.

Charlotte obviously had the lovely task of being more sexy and provocative, which is reflected in her poses. she has to seduce the camera by highlighting her mouth, hair, and making body shapes. We will use a more voueyeristic camera technique with her shots, so that she can tease the camera to follow her movements. This is a big task and will probably take some time to get used to for her, but she became more confident when shooting.
  • 80's/disco: Gold hotpants, snakeskin shoes.
We shot this brifly, but again gives an idea of dancing and mood.

4) Laura: the deadly sin "ENVY".
  • Dark green off-the-shoulder dress, dark lips, high heels.

Laura had to show her "envious" side by giving the camera dirty looks, and we used someones shoulder in half of a frame and her looking on in a bitchy way to show her character. I think this idea worked well because her character was clear.

  • 80's/disco: bodycon gold spandex dress, black boots.

In this photo Laura poses happily and it is clear that she's having fun and dancing. I think the "disco" theme is a good addition to the video because it allows everyone to get out of their set characters and just have fun, which will entice the audience.
